Marcus Mumford just spilled why his own house stays completely silent when it comes to music, and honestly, the reason is kind of relatable.
Turns out Carey Mulligan straight-up doesn’t let music play at home, even though her husband is literally a musician. Weird, right? Mumford finally explained why on the July 27 episode of “SmartLess.”
He said the problem is his brain just can’t handle background music. Once a song starts playing, he can’t help but zone in and actually listen to it instead of doing anything else.
“We had this conversation the other day. We had a party at home. It was Carey’s birthday, and someone came, and they were like, ‘There’s no music.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, we don’t really play music,'” he said on the show.
Then he got into the real reason. “I can’t do background music because if music’s on, I want to lean in and listen to it. And I can’t switch that part of my brain off. So then Carey doesn’t like having music in the house because I just stop having a conversation,” he explained.
People probably didn’t expect a famous singer to be the reason there’s zero music playing at home. 🎧

Mumford and Mulligan actually go way back, long before they became a couple. They met as kids at summer camp and stayed pen pals for years, though they eventually drifted apart and lost contact. It wasn’t until they were grown up that they reconnected, and things moved pretty fast after that toward marriage.
The two tied the knot back in 2012. Since then, they’ve built a pretty full family life together. Their daughter Evelyn arrived in 2015, then their son Wilfred came along in 2017. In 2023, they welcomed another daughter, but so far they’ve kept her name private.
Back in March, Mumford stood beside his wife during a pretty huge moment. Mulligan was given the Commander of the Order of the British Empire honor by King Charles III, recognizing her work in acting.
For the occasion, she wore a fashion-forward ivory blazer with a high collar, curved hem, and detailed 3D embroidery. She paired it with loose pleated trousers, patent leather flats, oversized sunglasses, and small dangly earrings, giving the whole outfit a bold, artsy twist.
