Prince William and Kate Middleton surprised many when they picked Adelaide Cottage as their home.
Adelaide Cottage is much smaller than their Kensington Palace apartment, but according to Robert Jobson in his book Catherine, the Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen, their choice had a special reason. Jobson shared with the Daily Mail that they wanted to be near Queen Elizabeth as she aged, favoring the cottage for its closeness to Windsor Castle.
William felt his moments with his grandmother were precious, and he was happy they decided to stay near her. Catherine understood how crucial it was for William, as a future king, to be physically closer during those last months, both for supporting the queen and his father.
The queen also appreciated having more time with them, and other royals praised William and Kate’s decision. Earlier reports said they could have chosen Frogmore Cottage instead but left that for Harry. Adelaide Cottage is just a short drive from the queen’s residence and close to where their children go to school.
Fans really admire how much they care about family. 💖
Jobson noted that being so close made a big difference. They saw each other often and spoke on the phone several times weekly, which strengthened their bond even more.

Adelaide Cottage has four bedrooms but no space for live-in staff. When not at Adelaide, William and Kate are at Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace or Anmer Hall in Sandringham Estate. They also own Tam-Na-Ghar at Balmoral, a three-bedroom home given by the Queen Mother in 2002.
William’s thoughtful choice brought him closer to his grandmother during her final days.
