Carrie Bradshaw ends up with Mr. Big at the end of HBO’s Sex and the City, but that’s not what the show’s creator wanted.
Darren Star told Vulture that he thought the grand Paris finale was too much like a typical rom-com. Star, who guided SATC for three seasons and then advised on it later, also worked on shows like Younger and Beverly Hills 90210. He praised Michael Patrick King for his work but said he preferred seeing Carrie happy on her own.
Star believes TV shows change over time, and so did Carrie. He always felt the series wasn’t about finding a man; instead, it showed how women can be independent without needing marriage to define them.
Charlotte once suggested that they could be each other’s soulmates, letting men just be fun companions. Fans may have liked this idea, but Star felt audiences wanted a more traditional ending.
Fans do sometimes want stories to end in familiar ways.
Sarah Jessica Parker shared her thoughts too, saying she didn’t think Carrie marrying Mr. Big took away from the show’s message about friendship. She believed Carrie chose marriage for herself without losing her independence.
